Builders have given up precious weekend hours to put the finishing touches on a new roof for a palliative care facility.
More than 20 volunteers from Monier Bricks & Roofing spent last Saturday morning at Totara Hospice South Auckland in Manurewa.
The roofing extension is part of an independently funded reconstruction worth $6.75 million that will see the hospice's nine-be in-patient unit expanded to 21 beds over the next two years.
General manager of the roofing company Paul Croudace says it's "extremely gratifying to be able to contribute to the redevelopment of Totara Hospice South Auckland".
"It's an amazing service, which is often not given enough attention and so many in our community have been touched by their work," says Mr Croudace.
"We're proud to support in this way and encourage other local businesses to do the same."
Hospice's acting chief executive Alan Beal says the contribution from Monier Bricks & Roofing equates to about $34,000. "This is a vital component of the redevelopment which we will be forever gratefuk for,"says Mr Beal.
